At the beginning of the day, on awakening (before even putting your feet on the floor), take a few moments to offer this prayer: “May I be open to the gifts of the day – to be a blessing in the world through my loving presence and to notice and receive the blessings of the day (which I know will come in many ways throughout the ordinariness of my life).”
At the end of the day, just before falling asleep – take a few moments to look back on the day and notice and express gratitude for the times when you experienced God or sensed God moving in your life (e.g. moments of joy and grace when your heart was touched with gratitude, connecting with God, with your own heart, with nature (e.g awe at a rainbow), with others (e.g. hug from a child), with life situations (seeing special goodness in the world). They may not all be warm fuzzy moments of joy, but perhaps receiving a phone call just when you needed it, or having the courage to move through a challenging time. And they might be times when YOU were a blessing in the world.
Writing these moments down in a journal can make the power of this practice even greater, so you can look back and remember the ordinary but simple ways God is blessing you each day!
